Sukko Go Green
Culture of Respect and Consideration
We would like to present that the ways or actions we do here is not because it's in trend. Going green has been in Thai culture for a long time.
Thais are brought up to be respectful of individuals and the environment. With such respect, a lot of consideration for those is shown in many of Thai life styles, traditional rituals and ceremonies.
Beneath us is the earth, where we live on and where our food grows from. Around us are the trees, which provide us food, medicine and air (oxygen). Everything has its own spirit. After we take their benefit, we have to pay back by avoiding to harm and taking care of them with respect.
We don't harm our guests with any harsh synthetic agents in our products or any MSG in our food, and we don't do that to our surroundings either.
The authentic ways Thais go green
Respect the trees
Thailand , which is home to the lush tropical garden, has a strong tradition of respect for the trees. Planting and taking care of trees have been a part of Thais daily existence. Children were (and still are) taught by the elderly in the family to plants tress around their homes which is mainly utilitarian. And these trees also keep the house cool and comfort all year round.
Planting “Trees for Directions” (the right trees for the right directions) is one of the tactics used to motivate Thais grows the trees around their home. Through traditional belief, these trees are recommended to be planted at each direction for the good fortune.
“ The Ritual of Ordaining the Trees ” is the smart way to preserve trees. To perform the ritual, the tree is wrapped around with yellowish material similar to the color of a robe of Buddhist monk. The ordained trees won't be cut down for any reason.
- Around Sukko Cultural Spa & Wellness Resort, the greenery and color is selected for fragrance, beauty, and utility. Guests can pick up flowers, leaves or fruit as if Thais do in their home.
- Suan Pak or Vegetable Garden is at the entrance of the property. The garden contain a number of plants, herbs and spices whose roots, leaves, stems, flowers and fruit used for Thai kitchen and medicinal purposes at spa and cuisine. “Trees for Directions” are also presented here.
- Saphaya Hill is the place to show that nature plays a vital role in traditional Thai medicine. On this hill, which is behind the property, many kinds of local herbs grow among the big rubber plantation, waiting for the explorers to trek up.
Respect the earth
- Reduce garbage : Minimally packaged amenity, Sukko Spa uses minimally packaged amenity to reduce the waste as much as possible.
- Nothing wasted : Fertilizer from the kitchen, Organic garbage are separated and fermented to form high quality, all natural fertilizers for use in Sukko’s gardens to prevent artificial chemical buildups in the soil. These fertilizers are made by fermenting the organic waste with molasses over a period of one month. After one month the fertilizer is filtered for the liquid, which is then diluted in water at a ratio of 1:200 (liquid organic fertilizer: water) before being added to the soil at dawn and dusk (the high temperature at noon will kill off the microorganisms in the organic fertilizer, reducing the efficiency).
- The Image of “Pra Mae Tho-ra nee” The Goddess of the Earth,
At Sukko Cultural Spa & Wellness Resort we pay homage to the goddess of the earth, Pra Mae Tho-ra-nee, with the large image in front of the drop-off area. Pra mae Tho-ra-nee image is kept supplied with regular offerings of incense, flowers and water to show appreciation of all the benefit she gives to us and pray for her protection.
Respect the water
Sukko Spa uses naturally fermented fertilizers from organic waste which will prevent any buildups of artificial chemicals in the soil and water, as well as preventing eutrophication.
- Waste water treatment :
Waste water will undergo treatment which will reduce wastage as water from the treatment can be used to nourish the plants in Sukko Spa’s gardens. Such treatment imitates the water system here in the tropics and thus ensuring that the natural ecosystem is not disturbed.
- Flower floating Ritual : Before entering the gate of the guest hall, guests are asked to float the flowers in the pond along the sidewalk in order to show appreciation of all the goddess of the water or “Pra Mae Khong-Kha” has done for us and an apology for what we’ve done with her. We also float away the past illness and distress into the water and plan for the new bliss. This activity is the ceremony in Thai culture that has been performed since the Sukothai period, called “Loi Kratong” ceremony.
